Frequently Asked Questions

Is my driver's license valid as a donor card?

Beginning in early 2004, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) began issuing a new digital driver's license for all New Jersey licensed drivers. Along with some special security features, the new digital license includes the opportunity to become an organ donor.

Drivers applying for the new license will be asked "Do you wish to have the 'organ donor' designation on your license?" Those who say "yes" will have the words "organ donor" displayed on the license and will become part of the statewide electronic database. This information will be used by an organ procurement organizations like NJ Sharing Network to confirm the wishes of a potential donor.

My license doesn't expire for two years, can I still be a donor without the digital license?

Yes, the pre-digital license has a place on the back for you to indicate your desire to be an organ donor. Be sure to tell your family about your wishes as well, so your desire to donate will be clearly known.

In New Jersey, the organ donor designation on a driver's license - either the "old" paper license or the new digital license - is a legally binding document for consent to donate.
