November Marks National Donor Sabbath

National Donor Sabbath marks a special time across the country when clergy and their congregations unite to increase awareness of the critical need for organ and tissue donation.

Although the second weekend in November marks the official weekend of National Donor Sabbath, NJ Sharing Network encourages its observance throughout the entire month of November. Faith leaders around the state participate in services and programs to increase awareness of donation and engage in discussions about the ability of human beings to save lives. Please view additional resources below for ways you can help promote Donor Sabbath in your congregation.

Most religions in the United States either officially support organ and tissue donation or support the individual choices of their members; donation is viewed as an act of compassion and generosity. Temples, churches, mosques, and other places of worship that observe the National Donor Sabbath do so each in their own fashion.

Does My Religion Support Organ & Tissue Donation?

Major religions support organ donation. In fact, the Rabbinical Council of America has approved organ donation and Pope John Paul II referred to organ donation as an act of great love.

Learn more about how your religions views organ and tissue donation.

View a web special on religion and organ donation featured in PBS’s “WIDE ANGLE.” WIDE ANGLE asks a rabbi, an imam, a Baptist minister and a Catholic priest (himself an organ recipient) to clarify some of the common misconceptions about what their respective faiths say about organ donation.
Father Edward Luciano, Reverend George Blackwell and Imam Shakur Alif Mustaffa are religious advisers for the NJ Sharing Network, an organization that matches organ donors with recipients, and Rabbi Haskel Lookstein is a member of the Halachic Organ Donor Society.
