William Reitsma, RN, BSN, CPTC
William Reitsma has been involved in all aspects of organ/tissue donation for 25 years. Prior to his involvement in transplantation he served as a critical care nurse for 5 years. He has served as clinical transplant coordinator, procurement coordinator and as Director of Clinical Services. This broad base of experience provides him with a comprehensive knowledge of all issues and current practices related to donation and transplantation. He was part of the initial start up of all New Jersey’s transplant programs, tissue recovery services and Organ Recovery. In addition to managing of clinical issues his practice has required him to address issues of public policy development, Bio-ethical concerns and the financial side of transplantation.
William is able to address varied public and professional audiences on almost any issue or practice in transplantation. These include but are not limited to: Donor management, immunosuppression, brain death, the donation process, transplantation of all organs, the legal framework for donation and bio-ethical concerns in transplantation and donation.
William has authored several articles published in the following journals JAMA, Critical Care Medicine, Progress in Transplantation and Transplantation.
William is also the recipient of several national and state awards: the Excellence in Management Award, the highest award given by the organ recovery community, the Achievement Award given by organ recovery community to some one who has made an outstanding contribution to the filed of organ recovery, and the Megan Jarret Award given by the NJ transplant Recipients community.
William served on several national committees and served as chair of the AOPO standards and accreditation committee for three years. He serves as an accreditation surveyor for AOPO and is the chair of the training committee for this group of only 15. He was appointed to HHS Secretary Thompson’s Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative in 2004 addressing the national health care community for best practices.
He received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from William Paterson University, Wayne, N.J. and has been a Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator for the past 12 years.
His professional affiliations include: Sigma Theta Tau, Nursing Honor Society, member: American Nurses Association, member, North American Transplant Coordinators Organization, Co-Chair, Quality Improvement Committee of the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations where he served as a member of the Standards and Accreditation Committee.
Reitsma, and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of three children and reside in Prospect Park, New Jersey.
